Callanwolde

Callanwolde Fine Arts Center

Callanwolde has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places due to its Gothic-Tudor style architecture and art education programs as one of the best art centers in the country.

The classes offered at Callanwolde are meant to sharpen the talents of students of any age in literary, visual and performing arts. The mansion is abuzz with activities that highlight all of the art activities undertaken by the Callanwolde Center.

Callanwolde is supported by the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners, County Parks, Recreational and Cultural Affairs through grants. The Georgia General Assembly and Georgia Council of Arts also partly support Callanwolde through appropriations.

Callanwolde once belonged to Charles Howard Candler a son of Coca-Cola founder Asa G. Candler but is presently owned by the DeKalb County. It is operated and funded by the Callanwolde Foundation, Inc which receives its grants from mostly government, private and corporate outfits. Exhibits are displayed and held at the Petite Hall on the upper storey of the mansion.

Callanwolde Activities

Callanwolde literally has something for every age group. There are dance, art, music, KungFu and Kindermusik classes for children. The dance classes cover most forms of dance ranging from ballet to jazz and other modern styles. Likewise the art classes cover painting, sketching, drawing, clay modeling, embroidery and craft to name just a few. Most types of folk and modern music specifically written for children is covered at Callanwolde.

For adults Callanwolde has a diverse range of art classes and workshops in addition to dance, fitness and exercise as well as music and performance art training. They also provide workshops in knitting, embroidery, photography, textiles, writing and special interests.

Callanwolde hold events and exhibits every season for members and invites guests that are masters in their specific fields. The Callanwolde Arts Center being a non profit organization is free of fees and payments of any kind. It works exclusively on the grants and appropriations it receives from outside government and other establishments. Students are therefore chosen on a first come first served basis.
